Why Ucluelet’s Edge to Edge Half Marathon Belongs on Your Vancouver Island Bucket List

November 2, 2026

There are plenty of half marathons you can run in a city. There are fewer where you can run beside the Pacific Ocean, pass through coastal rainforest, see rocky bluffs, and finish your race in a small West Coast town.

That is what makes the Edge to Edge Half Marathon in Ucluelet different.

The 2026 race took place on October 18, and if you are already thinking about running it next year, now is a good time to start planning your trip. The race is a great excuse to spend a few days in Ucluelet instead of coming in just for race day.

What Is the Edge to Edge Half Marathon?

The Edge to Edge is an annual half marathon and 10K race in Ucluelet, on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

The half marathon starts in town and takes runners along a mix of roads, forest, and the Wild Pacific Trail. The route passes the harbor and Boat Basin before heading out along the Tofino-Ucluelet Highway. Runners then make their way back toward Ucluelet, with parts of the route offering views of the ocean, rocky coastline, and rainforest.

The race finishes at the Ucluelet Community Centre.

For runners who do not want to tackle a half marathon, the 10K is another option. It also gives you a chance to see parts of Ucluelet, including the harbor and Wild Pacific Trail.

A Half Marathon With West Coast Views

One of the best things about running in Ucluelet is the setting.

You are not running through a busy city or along a long stretch of the same road. The route takes you through a small coastal community and into the forest, with the Pacific Ocean never feeling too far away.

The weather can also be part of the experience. October on the west coast can bring cool temperatures, rain, wind, and sometimes beautiful clear days. It is a good idea to come prepared for changing weather rather than counting on a perfect fall day.

That is also part of what makes a Ucluelet race weekend fun. You get the race, but you also get a few days to enjoy the coast.

What to Do After the Race

Once you cross the finish line, you will probably want to take it easy for the rest of the day. Luckily, Ucluelet has plenty to do without needing a packed schedule.

Walk the Wild Pacific Trail

If your legs are still up for a short walk, the Wild Pacific Trail is one of the best places to go.

You do not need to walk the whole trail. Pick a shorter section and take your time. The Lighthouse Loop is an easy choice, with ocean views, rocky coastline, and the Amphitrite Lighthouse.

After running 21.1 km, a slow walk beside the ocean can be a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Visit Ucluelet's Beaches

Ucluelet has several beaches that are easy to visit by car.

Big Beach is close to town and is a good place to sit and watch the ocean. If you want somewhere quieter, head farther out toward Florencia Bay or Halfmoon Bay.

You do not need to plan a full day of activities. Sometimes sitting on the beach with a coffee and watching the waves is enough.

Watch the Fall Waves

October is a great time to be on the west coast.

Storms can bring big waves and strong winds, and watching the ocean is one of the simple pleasures of being in Ucluelet in the fall. If the weather turns rough, find a safe viewpoint and stay back from the rocks.

After a morning race, this is an easy way to enjoy the coast without doing too much.

Where to Eat After the Race

After a half marathon, food becomes a pretty important part of the day.

Ucluelet has restaurants, cafés, and casual places where you can grab a meal or something warm to drink. If you are coming for next year's race, it is worth checking opening hours closer to your trip, especially for race weekend.

It is also recommended to make a dinner reservation ahead of time if you are traveling with a group. Race weekend can bring more visitors into town, and your favorite restaurant may be busy.

Make It a Ucluelet Race Weekend

If you are traveling from outside the area, it's not recommend coming to Ucluelet only for the race.

Give yourself at least a couple of nights if you can.

Arriving a day early means you do not have to worry about a long drive or travel delays on race morning. You can pick up your race materials, settle into your accommodation, and get familiar with the area before the race.

After the race, you can stay another day and enjoy Ucluelet without thinking about your drive home.

This is the idea of making the Edge to Edge a race-cation. You get the challenge of the half marathon, but the trip does not have to end when you cross the finish line.

Where to Stay for the Edge to Edge

If you are planning to run next year's Edge to Edge, book your accommodation early.

Ucluelet is a small community, and popular weekends can fill up faster than you might expect. Staying close to town can make race weekend easier, especially if you want to walk to restaurants or avoid driving around before the race.

Vacation rentals are also a good option for runners traveling with family or friends. Having a kitchen gives you more flexibility for breakfast and meals before and after the race.

If you are coming from outside Vancouver Island, it is also recommend staying the night after the race instead of trying to leave immediately. You will be tired, and there is no reason to rush away from Ucluelet.
